von Briesen & Roper, s.c. was started in 1904 by Ernst von Briesen, a 1903 graduate of Harvard Law School. Ernst opened his practice in Milwaukee in January 1904 and displayed a sign that read “Advocate”. His first cases included a $13.00 collection and several small claims. As his practice grew, he gravitated toward wills and probate and taught those subjects at Marquette Law. From these roots, von Briesen has grown to seven offices throughout Wisconsin and in Chicago with over 180 professionals.

von Briesen’s innovative spirit has fueled growth and evolution over the last 120 years. While our formative years focused on wills and probate, and banking and finance, we have continually evolved to meet client needs. In the 1950s we were among the first law firms to establish a health law practice. The 1970s saw us on the front edge of desegregation and civil rights cases. We continued expanding services to sophisticated corporate matters, labor and employment, high stakes litigation, real estate development, eminent domain, tax and IP. We continue launching new practice areas to meet the needs of our clients, including sports law and a Corporate Transparency Act service team.

Many attributes contribute to von Briesen’s success and longevity. First and foremost, our culture. The words our employees use most often to describe von Briesen are caring, supportive, and innovative. Another attribute is our ability to adapt to a changing marketplace, workplace and world. And finally, our commitment to the communities we live and work in – we embrace the mantra of “do well by doing good”. This mantra is woven into the fabric of our three core commitments at von Briesen: provide unparalleled service, deliver recognized expertise, and maintain a great place to work for our entire team.

We are excited for the next 120 years and see many opportunities for growth, both internally and externally. Externally we see opportunities in real estate development involving some of the biggest development and redevelopment projects in the area, including eminent domain, workforce housing, TIF/TID development and construction issues, and in high stakes litigation ranging from class actions to environmental to shareholder disputes. Our internal growth is driven by these external forces and we are always looking for great lawyers to join our team.
