Local news about the companies, people and issues that impact business in Northeast Wisconsin and beyond.

It’s a new year, which means new opportunities and new challenges. I’m proud that, as we begin the 19th volume of Insight on Manufacturing, this publication remains strong and remains focused on all things new — new technologies, new leadership, new opportunities and the geographic region we celebrate as N.E.W. — Northeast Wisconsin.

This month’s issue begins a new year by highlighting a still-quite-new technology: additive manufacturing. When I set out to tackle the topic, I wasn’t sure what I would find here in Wisconsin. And while, yes, adoption of 3D printing in the manufacturing sector has been slow to pick up steam relative to predictions, there are also examples of pioneers and expert resources right in our backyard. If you’ve ever struggled with questions like “What exactly is additive manufacturing?” or “My kid has a 3D printer to make action figures, but why would I need one at work?,” I encourage you to turn to page 8 and read how manufacturers and educational institutions are utilizing the technology and planning for its future adaptation. You’ll also hear from Coex 3D owner Todd Louthain, who manufactures high quality filament and advises businesses on additive manufacturing strategies every day, right here in Green Bay.

The NEW Manufacturing Alliance is always a great source of inspiration for new topics and issues, and this month’s talent feature on hiring immigrants and refugees is inspired by a presentation at NEWMA’s Dec. 11 quarterly membership meeting highlighting exactly those opportunities, which have made a huge difference for a number of manufacturers in our region. With a new presidential administration assuming office this month, there are expected to be new questions about immigration, deportation and refugee status. Turn to page 12 for Amelia Compton Wolff’s coverage, and turn also to page 16 for a brief unpacking of another NEWMA initiative: the 2025 Manufacturing Vitality Index, which has uncovered some new trends — and, well, reminded us of some long-standing ones, too.

And speaking of the NEW Manufacturing Alliance, we are excited with this issue to unveil a new crop of All Stars. This partnership with NEWMA is one of my favorite projects every year, as it shines a light on the next generation of manufacturing leaders. Congratulations to all the honorees and to all the companies with which they are employed. It’s a true pleasure to share these stories.
