Gov. Tony Evers announced he has joined a multi-state lawsuit challenging President Donald Trump’s cuts and changes to funding for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Continuum of Care program.

The program is the main funding source for keeping people housed throughout the state.

“These programs are in place to ensure we are taking a multifaceted approach to addressing homelessness in the U.S., and stripping resources from shelters that are already at capacity and stalling funding for programs that help keep folks housed and warm during the winter months is not the answer,” Evers said.

The CoC program is the federal government’s flagship program for funding housing and other services to those at risk of experiencing homelessness.

The Trump administration replaced a prior Notice of Funding, an announcement detailing a grant, earlier this month, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development adopted new policies that could cancel thousands of existing projects or force programs to reshape what they provide.

The Dane CoC region has 11 projects with nearly $5 million worth of rapid rehousing, permanent supportive housing and joint transitional/rapid rehousing projects. Only $1.9 million is eligible under the new funding structures announced by Trump.
