The Wisconsin Sustainable Business Council announced it will become an independent nonprofit starting Jan. 1.

The council is currently a part of Wisconsin Manufacturing Extension Partnership: WMEP Manufacturing Solutions.

“This transition marks a significant milestone in our corporate journey, allowing us to broaden our mission to impact sustainability in Wisconsin with a broader scope to serve the entire Wisconsin business community with services to improve sustainability — Education, Consulting, and Member Networking,” WSBS Managing Director Jessy Servi Ortiz wrote in a letter.

The WSMC vision is for all businesses, regardless of size, sector, or location to have a fully-integrated sustainability program. WSBC provides the knowledge, tools, support, and community to shape Wisconsin’s sustainable economic business future.

The organization will continue collaborating with WMEP to ensure Wisconsin manufacturers benefit from comprehensive sustainability resources and support.

WSBC began in 2007 as a think tank and forum for sustainability, founded by Tom Eggert, a professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. The mission was to explore, define, and collaborate on sustainability initiatives for Wisconsin businesses.

Since then, it has evolved into a dynamic platform where companies collaborate, exchange innovative ideas, discuss business cases, and learn from one another’s experiences. The flagship offering, The Green Masters Program, is a certification and recognition tool designed to help companies establish credible sustainability programs tailored to their specific needs. This program enables businesses to define and prioritize key sustainability issues, manage them systematically, and leverage best practices and insights from the broader community.

In 2019, WSBC transitioned ownership to Wisconsin Manufacturing Extension Partnership: WMEP Manufacturing Solutions. This collaboration with Wisconsin manufacturers has significantly grown the impact and shaped the state’s sustainability landscape.
