Wisconsinites lost over $106M to scams in 2024, FTC reports

Wisconsin consumers reported losing more than $106 million to scams in 2024, according to a new report from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The losses came from 30,287 fraud reports, with a median loss of $357 per victim, the Wisconsin State Journal reported.

The most common type of fraud in Wisconsin was imposter scams, followed by identity theft, credit bureau issues, online shopping scams, and bank-related fraud. The data, collected from the FTC’s Consumer Sentinel Network, includes reports from consumers, law enforcement agencies, the Better Business Bureau, and industry groups.

Nationally, consumer losses to fraud surged to $12.5 billion, a 25% increase from 2023. Investment scams were the most costly, totaling $5.7 billion, followed by imposter scams at $2.95 billion. The FTC received 2.6 million fraud reports nationwide, with online shopping and job-related scams also among the most reported.

The FTC has launched new dashboards in 2025, providing state-level insights on fraud trends, including age-related data and a breakdown of fraud subcategories by location. A detailed analysis of Wisconsin’s 2024 fraud reports is now available on the FTC’s website.
