Work on improvements at Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport that was begun in 2023 will be finished this year.
“Last year, GRB updated and improved its short-term parking lot and part of its long-term lot,” said Marty Piette, airport director. “This year, we’re moving into the final phase of the long-term parking update, which includes resurfacing, new security fencing, and new LED lighting. Additionally, the final phase of Runway 18/36 improvements will wrap up this summer.”
Among new projects taking place this year:
- GRB will remove the sidewalk canopy running along the front of the airport terminal and replace it with cantilevered canopies over the ticketing and baggage claim entrances. “The new canopies will provide extra coverage for travelers walking in and out of the airport and give a fresh look to the airport exterior,” added Piette. Last year, additional traveler crosswalks were added from the parking lots to the airport entrance.
- Electrical work will also take place on the airfield with the installation of new LED lighting along the taxiways and runways, consisting of the replacement of 21 miles of conduit and cables. GRB will also be replacing the rotating beacon, windsocks, and various signage around the airfield. This work will provide for more efficient and sustainable lighting, while at the same time enhancing safety.
“With all of the improvement projects taking place at GRB, our goal is to ensure we are providing a safe and enjoyable experience for travelers as well as the airlines and businesses serving the airport,” stated Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach. “The airport is a pivotal part of our community, with a significant economic impact. We are grateful to the community for their patience while the work takes place.”
Most work is anticipated to be complete by the end of summer.
The $8.2 million project is funded through a combination of Federal Aviation Administration Airport Improvement grant funds and Wisconsin Bureau of Aeronautics state aid grants.
