NEW Manufacturing Insights, a joint podcast of the Northeast Wisconsin Manufacturing Alliance (NEWMA) and Insight on Manufacturing (IOM) magazine sponsored by Wintrust Commercial Banking at Town Bank, N.A., talks youth apprenticeships on its 19th episode.
Co-hosts Ann Franz and Kate Bruns were joined by Nevaeh Krueger and her mentor, Troy Miller, of Walker Forge in Clintonville.
Krueger says the youth apprenticeship allowed her to explore a wide variety of jobs in four different departments at Walker Forge before she found her passion under the helmet. She credits Miller as her mentor for being “the best teacher I ever had.”
“I started with him and it was almost like I could do nothing wrong. There was always a solution to every single mistake, and I think that’s a super good way to teach. He very easily adjusted to my way of learning,” Krueger told the co-hosts.
She advises companies looking to start youth apprenticeship programs to offer a variety of hands-on experiences in a flexible environment.
“The whole point of youth apprenticeship is to learn, learn life skills, and it’s important for these workplaces to be flexible with my work schedule,” Krueger said. “Flexibility is super important to have when you’re working with youth apprentices.”
